During the 2017/2018 year it has been estimated that the Falls Free 4 Life service, run by Solutions 4 Health has saved the NHS and local primary care services over £5 million.
Nearly one-third of older adults experience a fall, and about one out of ten falls among older adults result in a serious injury, such as a hip fracture or head injury, that requires hospitalization. In addition to the physical and emotional pain, many people need to spend at least a year recovering in a long-term care facility. Some never return to their homes.
Slough Borough Council have commissioned the free to use falls prevention service to help reduce the risk to health and independence to older adults in the local community.
Over 600 falls prevention assessments were carried out of over the year, costing Slough Borough Council a total of around £150,000.
However, the cost of those people falling and potentially causing hip fractures far outweighs the cost. Each A&E visit would cost around £91, each non hip fracture nearly £8,000 and hip fracture £9,000. It has been calculated that the savings made by carrying out these falls assessments hits around £5.2 million.
